Nancy K. Rhoden Memorial Essay Contest
March 16, 2017
The Philosophy Department is pleased to announce the terms of the 2017 Nancy K. Rhoden Memorial Essay Contest.
The Nancy K. Rhoden Memorial Fund was established in 1990 to celebrate the achievements of Nancy Rhoden (OC ’74) in the fields of ethics—particularly medical ethics—and law. It is administered by the Philosophy Department, where Nancy Rhoden majored. Since it was established, the Fund has annually supported visiting speakers and an essay contest.
The contest will award prizes to be announced at the winners’ College graduation ceremony and printed in the graduation program. The winner will also receive a cash prize of $150.
This is an essay contest in the broad area of ethics, including moral theory, the philosophy of law, political philosophy, and applied ethics. Essays should be between 8 and 15 pages in length (double-spaced).
Members of the Department will judge the essays. The overall quality of the papers, with particular note paid to quality of argumentation and clarity, will determine the winners.
Please submit a hard copy of your essay to Linda Pardee in King 105 by noon on Friday, April 28th.
The Rhoden Essay Contest is distinct from the Philosophy Department’s Dahl Essay Contest. The same essay may not be submitted to both the Dahl and Rhoden Essay Contests.
