On Monday, November 30, 2015, at approximately 1:50 to 1:55 p.m. a student resident of Afrikan Heritage House who was present in his room with his roommate heard a male voice—that he thought came from Saunder’s lounge or the hallway—shout, “You’re dead, n...[derogatory term],” in a southern accent. The student and his roommate checked the area immediately inside and outside of the building, but did not see anyone present or leaving the area. The student reported the incident to Safety and Security, and upon recommendation of Safety and Security, to the Oberlin Police Department.
The Safety and Security Office is gathering pertinent information and attempting to determine who may have been present or witnessed the person who made the statement. Anyone who may have additional information, witnessed or participated in the event, should contact the Safety and Security Office at 440-775-8444, 24 hours a day. During daytime administrative hours, reports may also be made directly to the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at 775-8555. Any student may request a safety escort from the Safety and Security Office or for an officer to be present when they are feeling unsafe.
