The Safety and Security Office is informing the Oberlin Community of an incident in which a student reported being approached while leaving a Village House on Cedar Street on Sunday, February 17, 2013. A student reported that when retrieving a bike while leaving a house on Cedar Street at approximately 1:10 a.m., a large silver passenger van with windows and seats in the rear containing four males pulled into the driveway of an adjacent house. The side door opened and a male subject in a dark coat and hat exited. No words were spoken, but the male subject ran toward the student. The student sought safety by entering the rear of the residence. The incident was later reported to Safety and Security and the Oberlin Police.
Oberlin Police Department asks that anyone who either observed suspicious activity, such as a vehicle of similar description driving slowly along streets, or had a similar experience, share their information by contacting the police at the number listed below. Students may also contact the Safety and Security Office for assistance in reporting.
Individuals walking should remain aware that incidents like this can occur in any community. If you feel unsafe on campus, please contact Safety and Security for an escort or additional patrols. If off campus, contact the police, or campus safety and security, at the numbers listed below. Be alert to seeking safety in businesses that are open, or by using your student ID to swipe into a residence hall.
Safety and Security will provide safety escorts upon request at 440-775-8444. The student shuttle service operates from 9:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. nightly and can be reached at 440-775-RIDE (440-775-7433). Please report any activity you perceive as suspicious or threatening.
