Simple Assault on Woodland Street Sunday, November 11, 2012

Nov. 12, 2012

To: The Oberlin College Community From: Marjorie Burton, Director of Safety and Security Date: November 12, 2012

The Safety and Security Office is informing the Oberlin Community of an incident occurring on Woodland Street as students were leaving a party that had grown beyond authorized guests. At approximately 12:53 am on November 11, 2012 as Safety and Security officers were present in the front lawn of a Woodland Street Village House, an officer observed and interceded in a physical altercation between two males across the street on the city sidewalk near Noah Hall. One male, a student, was treated for facial cuts and released from Mercy Allen Hospital. The other male involved in the altercation, a town resident, was taken into custody by Oberlin Police Department and charged with a misdemeanor criminal charge. Both had been witnessed present at the party prior to the altercation.

Any additional information from potential witnesses should be reported to Oberlin Police or to Oberlin College Safety and Security.

While safety advice cannot assure a crime will not occur, consider incorporating safe practices:

When sponsoring a social event, proactively seek assistance from Safety and Security or local police if anything seems wrong, including too many people in attendance, presence of people you do not know, behavior that seems out of control, etc.

Make an agreement with friends you trust to arrive and leave a party together, and then keep that agreement.

When hosting a party realize you are responsible, under student regulations and state and local laws, for observing College requirements granted, for the supervision of alcohol service only within the law, and judicially responsible for behavior related to the event you are hosting.

If you witness a crime or become a victim of a crime, report what occurred immediately, and accept law enforcement advice about your personal safety.
