Submit Your Translations to the Oberlin College Translation Symposium. Deadline: March 6

March 2, 2012

We are now soliciting submissions for the annual Oberlin College Translation Symposium.

Each year for the last nine years the translation symposium has been the intellectual and creative high point of the Oberlin academic year. It is a fast-paced, multilingual, transformative event that exposes the audience to twenty literary pieces from a dozen or more languages.

Guidelines

By Tuesday, March 6, submit the following to Jed Deppman, jdeppman@oberlin.edu and Patrick O’Connor, poconnor@oberlin.edu:

  • An original-language text with reference to source
  • Your original translation into English

Times, Dates, & Places

  • Submissions due March 6, 2012, with notification on March 10.
  • The symposium takes place at 4:30 on Monday March 12, 2012 in Craig Auditorium.
  • Each participant will have five minutes to do three things: read the original; read the translation; comment on the translation process.

Students selected as participants will be invited to a lunch with award-winning translator Stephanie Sandler (Harvard University) at noon on March 12. Sandler will close this year’s translation event with a lecture at 4:30, March 13, in Craig.

The 2012 translation symposium is joyfully sponsored by Comparative Literature, Creative Writing, and Russian.
