Special Alert: Strong-Arm Robbery in Academic Building (Unarmed theft offense from a person / immediately fleeing)

At approximately 11:58 a.m. on Sunday, November 6, 2011 a College faculty member reported to Safety and Security via emergency phone that he was robbed moments earlier inside the King Building. He reported acknowledging two youths, possibly age 15 or younger, seated in the first floor north corridor. They soon approached him from the rear, pushed him to the floor, ripped his wallet from his pocket, and fled. Safety and Security officers and the Oberlin Police Department responded immediately and, Oberlin Police are investigating the incident. No weapon was reported. The building was open for ongoing testing and classes. The youths were not believed affiliated with Oberlin College. The victim struck his head, but declined medical treatment at the time of his report.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or any suspicious activity in the time period surrounding the incident, or may have been approached by suspicious persons on or near campus, should report the information immediately to the Safety and Security Office at (440) 775-8444 or directly to the Oberlin Police Department at (440) 774-1061.

For your safety, the following suggestions are offered:

  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times and report any persons immediately who seem out of place to Safety and Security at (440) 775-8444.

  • Program the security phone number and other emergency numbers into your phone.

  • Know the location of the nearest Emergency “Blue Light” Phone and use it to call for assistance or a safety escort any time you need help or want to be escorted in a building or on campus.

  • If you believe you are being followed, seek refuge in the nearest or occupied area where you can be assisted.

  • Do not stop for a stranger trying to get your attention. If someone is following you, change directions immediately and go to a safe location.

  • Report any incident of suspicious persons or acts to the Safety and Security Office at 440-775-8444 (or Ext. 58444). This includes persons not known to you in parking lots, academic buildings, or residence halls.
