Vandalism of 9/11 Memorial on Campus
Sept. 14, 2011
We learned this week that a flag erected by some of our students as part of a memorial to 9/11 victims was removed and vandalized. We believe that those responsible for the vandalism have been identified and will be held accountable. But this incident reminds us of our collective stake in upholding the values of our community of scholars—particular, respect for the expression of views that differ from our own. We hope that that all members of our community will consider the consequences before engaging in actions that harm others' freedom to express themselves. Since we all belong to an educational institution, let us hope this incident can be turned into useful dialogue and understanding.
