Special Alert: Simple Assault on a Student

The Office of Safety and Security is informing the community of a
simple assault (physical assault using hands or fists for which no
medical treatment was required) that occurred in the lower level of
Wilder Hall (the ’Sco) at approximately 12:21 a.m. on Sunday, May 1.
A male, later identified as a public patron not related to the college but attending a public program night, was reported to have dumped a beer over the head of a male student and struck him in the face. The student pushed him away and was struck again. The offending male, a resident of Lakewood who was tentatively identified after leaving the ’Sco, was placed on college trespass notice. Oberlin Police Department responded, as well as Safety and Security officers. The student declined to press charges at the time of the incident. He also declined medical treatment.
While not all crimes can be avoided, the Office of Safety and Security offers the following general advice:
When attending an event, be alert to persons who may be overly active and/ or showing signs of intoxication. Move away from them and report them to event staff or the Office of Safety and Security to check upon further.
If you are subject to any disorderly or aggressive behavior, seek assistance and safety. Don’t try to handle the situation by yourself. Contact event staff, the Office of Safety and Security (440) 775-8444 via cell, or dial 911 if there is an emergency.
Be observant of the person’s description, last place of travel, and time last seen. Supply the information to responding staff or officers.
When leaving the event, utilize available safety escorts: (440) 775-8444 or the student shuttle service at (440) 775-RIDE.
