Special Alert: Physical Assault in Business District

The Safety and Security Office is alerting the College community of a physical assault (assault using hands) of a female student who was walking on East College Street in the business district at approximately 1: 35 a.m. on Sunday, April 24, 2011. An Oberlin College Safety and Security officer, on patrol in the area, interrupted the assault and called the Oberlin Police Department, who detained and later charged two adult females with simple assault, a misdemeanor crime. The two adults charged with assault were not known to the student. The student who was assaulted did not require medical treatment for injuries at the time of the assault.
Becoming a victim of a crime cannot always be avoided, even when taking the utmost care. However the Safety and Security office offers the following information and services:
- Walk with trusted friends whenever you can when traveling by foot at night.
- Avoid strangers, not responding to questions or requests, and cross the street to avoid proximity. Seek safety in any nearby open business, a nearby residence hall or College building, or where there is group activity, if possible.
- Utilize Safety and Security escort services, available from dusk to dawn, by calling (440) 775-8444. The student shuttle system, (440) 775-RIDE, may also be avaialable from 9:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. for transportation on or near campus.
Please report any suspicious or unacceptable interactions on or near campus immediately to either Safety and Security(440-775-8444), or to the Oberlin Police Department (440-774-1061). For an emergency, dial 9-1-1.
